Sony’s New Camera Punches Above Its Weight

Diposting oleh nangsa on Minggu, 31 Juli 2011

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2011/07/31/technology/personaltech/31gw-sony2/31gw-sony2-blog480.jpgYou probably know all of the advantages of digital SLR cameras: interchangeable lenses; large sensors for better image quality and better low light shots; and no shutter lag. But you might not realize that you can get almost all of those features in a much smaller (though no less expensive) package.

Those packages are now generically most often known as MILC, or mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, or sometimes CSC, or compact systems cameras, or my favorite, electronic viewfinder with interchangeable lens (EVIL).

Take the new Sony Alpha NEX-C3, for instance. At 4.3 by 2.4  by 1.3 inches and eight ounces, it is the smallest, lightest of the current crop with an APS sensor. That is important because an APS sensor is the same size as that of many entry-level digital SLRs. The NEX-C3 has a 16 megapixel APS-C sensor, but don’t place too much weight on the pixel count; it’s a poor indication of quality. Sensor size is more important, and it’s comparatively big.

Photography

Taking, manipulating and organizing digital photographs.

The camera, just like an SLR, takes different lenses, giving you more options than with a point-and-shoot camera. Current lenses are a 16mm fixed lens (equivalent to a 24mm on a 35mm camera) for $250, an 18 to 55mm zoom (equivalent to a 27 to 72) for $300, and an 18 to 200 zoom (equivalent to a 27 to 300mm) $800. A macro lens, a tele-zoom and a portrait lens are in the works for this year.

The Nex-C3 with the 18 to 55 zoom lists for about $650, about the same as a Nikon or Canon DSLR with an equivalent lens.

So far, so good. But there are some downsides. One rap against MILC cameras is that they are slower to focus automatically than DSLRs. That is true, agrees Sony, but only if you aren’t using a DSLR’s LCD screen to compose your photo. If you do, your DSLR is using the same focusing method as the mirrorless camera and will be about the same speed, said Mark Weir, senior technical manager for digital imaging at Sony.

Another issue is that the small size of the cameras leaves little room for buttons, so you have to dig through menus to find all the features.

Sony is trying simplify the system with a menu item called Photo Creativity that lets you dial in effects without knowing your bokeh from a hole in the ground. For instance, if you want an artfully blurry background for a portrait, you don’t need to know how to set Aperture Priority. In Photo Creativity, you go to Defocus Background. You can then see what the effect does to your picture on the LCD screen. White balance is called “color,” and it isn’t set in Kelvin, but “warm” and “cool.” But don’t worry, all of the manual controls are still there.

While you can find similar types of cameras from Olympus, Panasonic, Leica and others, this format hasn’t caught on in the United States. “For Americans, when it comes to form factor, bigger is better,” said Christopher Chute, an analyst who follows the camera market for market research firm IDC.

In Japan, one-third of interchangeable lens cameras sold are mirrorless, Mr. Chute said. He predicted that when the cost hits $500, they will get traction here as well. “Mirrorless will provide many of the same benefits as the DSLR,” he said, and with a smaller, more convenient size, they may spend less time in the back of the closet — as some SLRs and camcorders have found themselves.

Solar Butterfly flits around endlessly

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/solar-butterfly.jpgAs long as the sun is out, the Solar Butterfly that you see here will definitely flit around your garden joyfully, even though there is nary a single flower for it to feed on, seeing nothing but patches of weeds everywhere. All you need to do is place the stake with solar panels in your garden outdoors, although you can also opt for your favorite potted plant if you want to, and the Solar Butterfly will flutter around, moving its wings just like the real deal.

Of course, during those downcast, rainy days, if you’re so used to having a faux butterfly move around during the mornings, there is always the option to throw in a single AA battery to keep its fluttering action going. The solar stake stands at 16″ tall, where the butterfly is 2.5″ tall and 2″ wide. You will be able to choose from Orange Monarch or Yellow Swallowtail, and this is one butterfly that won’t die after a few days.

How much, you ask? The Solar Butterfly can be part of your garden’s make up for $11.99.

PayPal hands over 1,000 Anonymous IP addresses to the FBI

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://cdn2.ubergizmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/27-PayPal.jpgRemember last year when PayPal was attacked by Anonymous after it froze Wikileaks’ account? Well, it looks like PayPal has finally decided to strike back against the hacking coalition. Apparently the hackers left behind enough information to be traceable. PayPal has reported that it has given a list of over 1,000 IP addresses to the FBI: IP addresses that were linked to the PayPal attack last year.

As of now, there’s no telling how useful the list of IP addresses are though. Because the attack was a distributed denial of service (DDoS), the IP addresses might prove to be worthless. DDoS attacks are usually performed by zombie computer systems: systems that have been infected by Trojans that its owner has no knowledge of.

And even if the IP addresses weren’t from zombie computer systems, they might be fake or spoofed addresses, since it’s pretty much a pre-requisite for hackers to mask their addresses before performing ant attacks. Not masking their IP addresses would pretty much be an invitation to get caught.

We’re not sure why PayPal waited this long to release the information, but we’re guessing that the recent boycotting movement started by LulzSec and Anonymous might have spurred the company to do so. Stay tuned for more updates.

7.2 million UK drivers are "GPS racers" says survey

Diposting oleh nangsa on Sabtu, 30 Juli 2011

In a survey conducted by Sainsbury's car insurance, 7.2 million of Britain's 37 million drivers have admitted to taking their satnav's estimated journey time less as advice, and more as a challenge.

"Our research shows a worrying trend of drivers racing against the projected arrival time set by their GPS systems" said Ben Tyte, head of Sainsbury's car insurance division.

“We are encouraging drivers using this new driving technology to have the safety of any passengers, other road users and pedestrians at the forefront of their minds and not be tempted to become GPS racers."

In pursuit of their personal bests, Sainsbury's say that 570,000 drivers speed through amber traffic lights, 340,000 admit to overtaking on blind bends, while another 240,000 have tailgated other cars.

The study also claims that 150,000 people have admitted to being injured in collisions while racing their own GPS system.

Cool gadgets to beat the heat wave: At play

Diposting oleh nangsa

Cooling your home and keeping your cool at work is necessary to keep your sanity during record-meltingly hot summer days, but what about when you’re out and about or on vacation? With all the tech toys that we carry in our bags, we’re actually surrounded by devices that can power others. Here are five cool products you can tote in your bag wherever you roam.    iPhone 4 Dock Fan

Yes, it’s only slightly less geeky than cooling yourself with a spray bottle and fan attached, but at least you won’t need to look for extra batteries than the one in your iPhone or iPod touch. This adjustable fan attaches to your device’s dock connector and features a flexible design so you can better direct the flow of cool air from its soft blades. It’s compatible with everything from a first-gen iPod touch to the current iPhone 4 so it could be a handy gadget to keep in your bag for short cooling sessions. Available from Japan Trust Technology for approximately $16 USD plus shipping. [Watch a demo]

    USB Cooler Cushion

You’re driving on cruise control and blasting the AC at your face as you head to the camp site, but you find yourself becoming increasingly distracted by how warm your seat feels. With more and more cars becoming equipped with a USB connector, this USB Cooler Cushion from Thanko could keep your seat, um cooler, on your next road trip. Available from GeekStuff4U.com for $32 plus shipping.
    Cooling Foam

When you’re in the sun all day long playing 18-holes, a wet towel on the back of your neck just doesn’t beat the heat. That’s where the latest Japanese invention, the Cooling Foam, comes into play. The Hokkyoku Monogatari Cooling Foam is extremely malleable so you can either shape it into a wristband or necklace, or just rub it into your skin for some invisible relief. See the Cooling Foam in action in this video (the second product is the Ice Sparkle Freezing Gel that sounds worst than it probably feels). Like most strange products from the Land of the Rising Sun, this blue foaming coolant is only available in Japan, so you will have to continuing walking around the golf course with a  towel on your neck, at least for now.     White “iPhone 4″ Air Cooler

Have you ever wished your iPhone 4 could be your personal fan? Apparently someone has because MIC Gadgets discovered this portable fan with iPhone 4 styling while shopping in China. The idea is you could stuff this iPhone-like fan in your bag and keep yourself cool wherever you go, but may look silly to others. According to the MIC Gadgets, the portable fan is light, about three to four times thicker than an iPhone 4, and has a power button that looks an awful lot like the iPhone’s home one. However, its poor battery life means you won’t get more than one hour of use after spending five charging it. At it’s affordable. Available from KOGadget.com for $9.90 plus shipping. Asus, HP and Acer Ultrabooks are coming

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://www.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/hp-ultrabook.jpgOkay, tablets are portable PCs but not all portable PCs are tablets. If you don't fancy touchscreen typing or lugging around your chunky laptop, you're in luck. Late 2011 and early 2012 will see a surge in releases of Ultrabooks – ultra-slim Intel-powered notebooks – heading our way.

Intel says Ultrabooks can't be thicker than 0.8inches – and everyone in tech is rising to the challenge. Asus is on course to be first out of the blocks with the launch of its UX line in September, starting in Taiwan. It's managed to shave 0.1in off the MacBook Air but has admitted today that the original US$1000 (£614) price ceiling is likely to be broken because laptops like the UX21 will be powered by Intel Core i5 processors rather than the slower (and cheaper) Core i3 .

HP's Ultrabook is running off schedule but Acer and Dell are also set to bring out ultra-slim laptops with Intel Core i5 or i7 processors in early 2012. Keyboard lovers, your time is almost here again.

This colorful grid is actually a table top, brought to you by way of TI's MSP430 microcontroller, and it knows how to get down. The table is made up of 128 frosted glass cubes, each apparently capable of emitting 16 million colors. Its creators also produced a special beat-detection software, that could very easily have your furniture outshining the bumpers and grinders at your next party. If you're looking for a little extra something from your coffee table, you can find full build instructions at the source link below.

Google tablets seen overtaking iPad in 5 years

Diposting oleh nangsa

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Tablet computers running Google's Android software will catch up with Apple's iPad and surpass it in 2016, research firm Informa said.

Informa said it expects Apple's current 75 percent market share to fall to 39 percent in 2015, when Android market share will grow to 38 percent.

"From 2013, as cheaper and more advanced Android tablets enter the market, we forecast that sales will pick up considerably, eventually surpassing iPad sales in 2016," analyst David McQueen said in a statement on Wednesday.

Samsung Electronics Galaxy Tab has been the best-selling Android tablet so far, but also other vendors including Motorola Mobility use it on their devices.

"We have seen a huge explosion in the tablet market in recent years, driven primarily by the iPad, and we estimate that the market will go from strength to strength, growing from under 20 million tablets sold in 2010, to over 230 million in 2015," McQueen said.

The resulting images are then fed directly into a CNC machine where a drill is left to make the wood-carved magic happen. Need some visual confirmation of this awesome feat, then head past the break for a video demo of this old-timey optical illusion.

Medion shows off new PCs at the Gadget Show Live

Diposting oleh nangsa

Medion was showing a range of new computers at the Gadget Show Live 2011 in Birmingham this week, so we went to take a look.

For starters, it was showing several powerful Erazer gaming PCs. The P7705-D, pictured above, should suit most gamers, and costs around £800. For those wanting even more power, though, there was also the X7705 - a huge PC with a whopping 12GB of memory and 6TB of storage. At around £1500, though, it isn't cheap.

There were notebooks too, of course, including a range of Akoya laptops using Intel's new "Sandy Bridge" i5 and i7 processors. Or for those after something more portable there were also new netbooks, including the Akoya E1225:

 medion-netbooks

This neat little netbook uses Intel's Atom processors, and has a detachable lid so you can easily change its colour. Expect to pay around £250 for a dual core model.

http://www.computeractive.co.uk/IMG/763/169763/sony-old-tv-iplayer-370x229.JPG?1302884749Sony has been showing off its newest products for 2011 at the Gadget Show Live 2011 in Birmingham.

One product on show is the N100, which is a media streaming device that can also show programmes from on-demand services such as the BBC iPlayer. To demonstrate the £100 player in action, Sony had it playing iPlayer programmes on the oldest TV it had, a 50-year-old CRT model which you can see in action in our picture above.

It was also demonstrating its 'premium' X50i iPod dock, a dual-lens 3D camcorder that records in the highest 1080p resolution, and another camcorder, pictured below, which has a built-in projector.

Sony's camcorder with a built-in projector

Sony also announced several new laptop and desktop models: the 24in LS21 all-in-one has 24 commands built into the touch-sensitive bezel of the screen, so it's not neccessary to use the keyboard. It will be available in June and has a Core i7 processor, 1TB hard disk, HDMI input and a TV tuner.

The F21ZE laptop is a 3D model, with one set of polarised active-shutter glasses in the box. It has a Blu-ray disc player, 8GB of memory and a 640GB hard disk. The SB1Z9E, with 500GB hard disk and Core i5 processor, is lighter than a Macbook, according to Sony, while the CA1S1E/G is available in several colours, with a glowing Vaio logo on the back panel.

Sony's new products are all on show on its stand at the Gadget Show Live 2011 in Birmingham. You'll find a complete list of our show reports on our Gadget Show Live 2011 news blog.

pple employee spotted using the iPhone 5

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://www.gadgetsandgizmos.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone-52-250x254.jpgGiven that we are likely less than two months away from the announcement of the iPhone 5, rumors are already stacking up, but this one could be the biggest of them all.

An unknown Apple device has been spotted by a resident from San Francisco that was being used by what he claims is an Apple employee. The photographer sent the images to Apple news website 9 to 5 Mac, saying that he got a pretty good look at the phone and the pictures did not do it justice.

According to the eagle-eyed tipster, he got a good view of the device, but said that he did not manage to see the home/front button.

The anonymous tipster described the phone as “almost EVO-like” when it comes to the device’s display, and it looks like it is thinner than the iPhone 4. The “iPhone 5″ device features a tapered backing and rounded edges. The source said that the man was trying to hide the phone from prying eyes, attempting to cover the Apple logo as much as possible.

Considering that Apple usually gives out iPhone prototypes to employees to test it in the real world before launching the device, this could be one case. Last year, an Apple employee left a prototype of the iPhone 4 in a bar, which was leaked by Gizmodo.

This week, a senior executive from Swisscom said that the iPhone 5 release date will be on September 5th in the U.S., followed by a worldwide launch a month after. If Apple is testing the new iPhone 5 in the real world, we won’t have to wait long for its announcement.

Spy pic snapped on train could be the iPhone 5

http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone-5-leak-580x365.jpgYesterday we showed you pics of the cases that had surfaced that were supposed to be for the iPhone 5 according to sources. The cases in the leaked photos are made from silicon and are supposedly based on leaked details from Foxconn. The cases apparently will fit a device that has a wider screen and a tapered back.

Another leaked photo has been spied that shows a person sitting on a train in San Francisco using a different looking iPhone. According to the person, that shot the spy shot the phone was not like anything he had ever seen. The shooter has an iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS so he should know what they look like. 9to5Mac says that it contacted the guy who shot the pics and he seems legit.

The guy supposedly got a good look at the device and the person using it is thought to be an Apple worker. Perhaps he is on his way to a bar for a party and tomorrow we will see better pics. The guy that took the photos also thought he was wrong until he saw the photos of the leaked cases from yesterday and he says the device he saw would fit those perfectly. This rumor needs a handful of salt, but it is interesting nonetheless.

Circulation Improving Leg Wraps

Diposting oleh nangsa on Minggu, 17 Juli 2011

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/circulation-leg-wraps1.jpgNo, this device is not, I repeat, is not a shambo or a Subway wrap. Instead, it intends to bring relief to those who suffer from sore muscles as well as poor circulation in the lower part of your body. For instance, the Circulation Improving Leg Wraps are capable of inflating or deflating accordingly to help improve circulation, give those overworked, sore muscles a nice workout, while reducing the amount of swelling in your lower extremities.

Some might go as far as to say this is similar to hospital compression boots which stimulate circulation in sedentary patients. The leg wraps themselves will boast half a dozen airbags which wrap around the whole leg, inflating and deflating so that your blood vessels will get some assistance to expand and contract. The compression intervals will help stimulate circulation in the thighs, hamstrings, calves, and feet, which in turn facilitates blood flow back to the heart.

With a corded remote, you can opt from three levels of intensity and have the luxury of seven programs to choose from, where these will pinpoint different areas and at varying intervals. Bring some much needed relief home for $149.95, what say you?

iCade: Ultimate Arcade Experience with Your iPad

http://gadgetspy.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/icade_iPad_arcade_cabinet-300x187.jpgThe iCade is a classic example of how April Fool’s Jokes can go so right. When ThinkGeek came up with the then fictional iCade, little did they know how well received it will be. The joke was so well received in fact, that Ion decided to manufacture and sell the real thing. So now, we have a way of enjoying the iPad in true arcade style. iCade, which is currently the only iPad arcade cabinet in the market, has built-in full-sized joysticks and buttons to let you experience arcade gaming at its best with your iPad. The cool thing about iCade though is that it isn’t just for display. In fact, it is compatible with about 100 Atari games, including classics such as Asteroids, Centipede, and Battlezone. The games, however, do not come with the iCade , but can be downloaded through your iPad’s App Store. What comes with the iCade is the Atari Greatest Hits App, so that finding and downloading your favorite Atari games becomes super easy. Of course, it’s not as if it’s that hard to find a game in the App Store! You can also download one free Atari game using the app. At only $99.99, perhaps the only real bummer with the iCade right now is that they don’t ship it outside the US and Canada yet. So you’ll have to find a reseller in the UK if you want one, or ask a friend in the US to ship one out to you.

New Microsoft social networking/search site leaked

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://www.gadgetsandgizmos.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/socl.com-homepage-250x149.jpgMicrosoft’s research team may have leaked the tech giant’s plans for a social search service developed to take the spotlight away from Google’s new service Google+.

A writer from Fusible, while looking for the mysterious buyer of the domain social.com, found a website called Socl.com, a site that was registered by Microsoft in 1998. While it is only a teaser page, it gave hints about a social networking tool from the company.

At Socl.com’s teaser page, Facebook and Twitter sign ins were spotted, and a text that reads: “With Tulalip you can Find what you need and Share what you know easier than ever,” with the words ‘Find’ and ‘Share’ capitalized.

While the writer said that the discovery was made on July 13th, users who are trying to take a peek at the website were greeted with an error message that read: “Thanks for stopping by. Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the web. We didn’t mean to, honest.”

Reports say that you can sign in to Tulalip using your Twitter or Facebook account.

Search Engine Land’s Matt McGee spoke with a representative from Microsoft who said: “Socl.com is an internal design project from one of Microsoft’s research teams which was mistakenly published to the web.”

It is still too soon to speculate if this is a response by Microsoft to the new Google+, which was launched on June 28th and has already amassed 10 million users.

Search engines affecting memory, says research

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://cdn.asset.t3.com/images/variants/google%20search%20engine_w300.jpgPoor memory? Blame the internet.

According to research from Columbia University, using internet search engines has affected the way a person's brain remembers things.

The ability to find anything you want on the internet by using search engines like Google makes people remember less.

According to Betsy Sparrow, psychologist, Columbia University, people tend to forget things they can easily find on the internet.

Her paper is titled, "Google Effects on Memory: Cognitive Consequences of Having Information at Our Fingertips" and the research was carried out in four studies.

In one test, participants were told to type statements; when they were told what they typed was saved, they made less of an effort to recall the things they typed, than when they believed nothing was being saved.

"Perhaps those who teach in any context, be they college professors, doctors or business leaders, will become increasingly focused on imparting greater understanding of ideas and ways of thinking, and less focused on memorisation," said Sparrow

Overlooked and underrated gadgets and technology

Guest contributor Ethan Siegel is cofounder and CEO of Orb Audio.

Press coverage of consumer electronics has always been interesting to me. There are definitely some “haves” and “have nots” when it comes to publicity and mindshare, and if you are a have not, it is hard to get the public’s attention. Even a brief scan of most consumer electronics or technology websites will educate you on the rumors about the next four generations of each of the iEverythings. Better screen this, dual-core that, rumored to work on all planets between Jupiter and Venus, etc. Keeping up with current and future Apple products is not just easy, it is unavoidable.

With that in mind, I was hoping to cover some of the smaller and perhaps less recent product releases that I̢۪ve found myself enjoying at home and at the office. I think I can appreciate technology more than some of the younger generations because I grew up without a lot of the things that we take for granted today. I am a little over 40, and beginning to notice more people who are surprised that there was no internet when I was growing up, or cell phones, or GPS. Traveling? Well, we actually had to know where we were going and how to get there before we left. If we got lost, you had to find a person to ask or a pay phone.

Today, though, I enjoy the comforts of all of these things. I’m not a fanatic, and I don’t wait in lines for new products. But I am an enthusiast, and I usually get around to checking out new technology. Sometimes I like to wait for the initial panic to die down and allow other people to discover all of the bugs in a new device. Either way, I do keep an eye out for interesting products and a lot of them eventually wind up in my home. I’d like to share my thoughts on some recent acquisitions:

AT&T-MicrocellAT&T Microcell
This product brings five-bar AT&T cell service to any place with an Internet connection. I had absolutely no cell coverage in my house (from any carrier) and now I have full voice and data service on my iPhone. Yes, it should be free since you are already paying quite a bit for AT&T cell service. However, it’s only $50 after rebate, and it is something worth considering if you have poor cell service at home or someplace else. There is no monthly charge if you want to use your minutes already included in your calling plan. You can also pay an additional fee to get unlimited minutes through the MicroCell.

AT&T is not the only carrier with this technology. Most of them have something like this by now, and it’s a great problem solver if your carrier can’t get you good service and you want to take matters into your own hands.

Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable Batteries
I have two kids, plus my own battery habit to support. We go through a lot of AA batteries. I’ve used rechargeable NiMH batteries for years, as they are not that much more expensive than disposable batteries and even perform better in some products. Eneloop are an improved version of the rechargeable battery, and there are two reasons that I like them.

First, they come charged, which is extremely convenient. Most other rechargeable batteries have to be charged for at least a few hours before you can use them.

Second, they basically don’t lose their charge over time. Other rechargeable batteries can lose one percent of their charge per day and be dead in a few months.

Together, this means that the Eneloops have the same convenience of disposable batteries – they are ready to use right out of their package, and they are OK if they sit unused in a toy or cabinet for months at a time. Sanyo recently released the newest generation of these batteries, which can now undergo 1500 recharge cycles, vs. 500 in the prior version. There are also a few other brands selling these types of batteries, just look for a rechargeable NiMH battery that comes pre-charged and you are probably on the right track. This is a great way to save money and be environmentally friendly at the same time.

Intel Sandy Bridge Computer
Confession time…my last computer was old. Almost five years old, which means it sputtered on a lot of modern tasks, like streaming HD video. It was also starting to act up a little, and the time to upgrade had come. Of course, I thought about buying an iMac and how much more handsome it would make me. In the end, though, I decided to get a high-performance Windows PC to see if it could compete.

There wasn’t really an Apple computer that met my desktop needs. I didn’t really need a new screen for my desktop computer (I have 2 good monitors already), so the iMac didn’t really make sense. The Mac Mini was in need of an update (coming soon, I think), and the Mac Pro was more computer, and more expensive, than I needed. So, I tried to take all of the Apple tricks, plus more, and cram them into a PC.

Intel-Sandy-BridgeI chose a lightning-fast SSD drive for Windows and all of my programs, and a spacious regular hard drive for data storage (SSD drives store your programs on flash memory chips instead of spinning hard drive platters, making them much faster). I added a good graphics card, lots of memory, and optimized the components and the case to be as quiet as possible.

Bottom line? I love it. Windows 7 is not quite as easy to use as Mac OS, but it’s a great improvement over prior versions. I highly recommend using a flash-based SSD as your Windows and program drive. No other upgrade will really have a bigger impact on the speed of your computer. Any doubts, look at the second-generation MacBook Air (late 2010), which has a very dated processor and graphics card, but feels fast as lighting when you use it because of the SSD drive. You don’t have to get the fastest or biggest SSD drive, as almost any SSD drive is going to be several times faster than a normal spinning hard drive. I’d recommend 128GB for the size, although you can make do with 64GB if you don’t plan on installing a huge number of programs.

It also turns out that Sandy Bridge was one of those products where it was good to hang back and let other people work out the bugs. Intel had some bumps getting the chipsets right, and there was even a recall of some of the first Sandy Bridge products. I’m glad I waited to buy the computer and didn’t rush out on the first day they were released. The kinks appeared to be worked out now, though, so you can buy with peace of mind.

That̢۪s it for now. You may have heard of some or all of the products that made my list, but perhaps this has been a reminder that there are plenty of cool products that are still delivering the goods long after they have faded from the headlines.

GTA 5 release date nears as it hits Gamestation stock list

Diposting oleh nangsa on Sabtu, 16 Juli 2011

http://cdn.asset.t3.com/images/variants/GTA-1_w300.jpgThe eagerly awaited arrival of Rockstar’s Gran Theft Auto V title looks to have taken one step closer to the realms of reality as the mooted release appears in a Gamestation product listing.

Three years on from the release of GTA IV, GTA V has popped up on an upcoming stock sheet of highstreet gaming retailer Gamestation as well as reportedly making a brief appearance on the company’s online retail outlet.Whilst developer Rockstar is currently remaining tight-lipped over the expected upcoming arrival of GTA V, Official Xbox Magazine reported earlier this month that fans of the at times controversial franchise can “expect Grand Theft Auto V to be announced later this summer.”

Despite the latest Gamestation leak suggesting GTA 5 will be released earlier rather than later, previous reports have claimed the next edition to the gaming classic will be held off until 2012 with a GTA 5 release date previously tipped as January 15th.

Google+ breaks the 10 million users mark

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/images/BmdF/google-plus-10-million-users-0.jpg?20110715-100014Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page has confirmed that the company's new social network, Google+, has hit 10 million users, despite the fact that it is still in a limited field trial period.

The stat was revealed during Google's earnings call (which revealed a 36 per cent profit increase for the Mountain View based web giant) and Page has also stated via a post on the social network that people are sharing over 1 billion items per day; an average of 100 shares per user, per day - which we understand to include everything possible with the platform, even adding people to circles.

Speaking about the company as a whole, but clearly with a nod to Google+, Page wrote: "We have made a good start but we are at only 1 per cent of what’s possible … Google is just getting started … and that is why I am here - working hard to lead this company to the next level."

Some third party analysts have had a look at the 10 million figure and come up with the interesting conclusion that most Google+ers are men. SocialStatistics puts the male share at 86.6 per cent, FindPeopleOnPlus have it at slightly less - 73.7 per cent.

With the bulk of Google+ users being web designers, developers and tech journalists (or to give them their collective term, "nerds") the male dominance isn't really surprising though.

Mac OS X Lion: everything you need to know

Diposting oleh nangsa on Selasa, 12 Juli 2011

http://cdn.electricpig.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mac-os-x-lion.jpgOS X Lion is Apple’s next-gen operating system, and all signs point to it landing in the next few days. So what’s it bringing to the party? Well, gesture controls, better apps compatibility, a new way of keeping track of everything running on your Mac, and more.

Read on for all the mane features.

It may have been announced back in October last year, but now Apple is readying OS X Lion for launch later this week. There are over 250 new features, but check out the most exciting below.

1 Multi-touch gestures

At its October outing, Steve Jobs said Lion was “Mac OS X meets the iPad.” And it’s certainly taken inspiration from iOS, with multi-touch gestures being the main one. Sadly we won’t be seeing a Minority Report-style touchscreen desktop, but instead the Magic Mouse and MacBook’s trackpad will gain new abilities, letting you pinch to zoom everything, as well as scroll and swipe. It’s a more intuitive way of navigating your desktop and web pages, not to mention far quicker than finding the correct button to click.

2 App Home screens

Launchpad is essentially a Home screen for your apps – launch it with a gesture, and it’ll show all your apps laid over a slightly blurred desktop. Then you can launch and arrange at will. Farewell, Applications folder.

3 Full screen apps

Yes, you’ll be able to launch apps fullscreen (though without losing the Dock), helping you use them more effectively. Fantastic for games, movies, and reading apps, maybe not so much use if you’re multitasking. But still, bravo Apple for giving us the option.

4 Dip in and out of apps

Apps auto save when you quit them, so whatever you’ve done won’t be lost just because you have to answer an email. Then when you jump back into the app, everything will be exactly as when you left it.

5 AirDrop

You can send files to anyone nearby, no Wi-Fi required, with AirDrop. Just click and it’ll show other users within 30 feet – then drag the file to that person’s name, they accept, and the file appears in their Downloads. Simple.

6 Mail

Mail has been given a makeover too, with conversation threads presented like the iPhone’s messaging system, so you can see the whole discussion, as well as a new simpler way to search. A favourites bar brings your most used folders right to hand, too.

7 Mission Control

Like Cards in HP’s webOS, Mission Control shows you stacks (or ‘piles’, somewhat unfortunately in Apple’s terminology) of windows you have open, as well as any apps running. Very handy for those of us with cluttered desktops.

Microsoft: It's time to put Windows XP to bed

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/images/Bjlc/microsoft-windows-xp-time-for-bed-0.jpg?20110712-113026Microsoft is urging Windows XP users to jump ship as the ancient operating system nears the end of its days - in terms of extended support at least.

Speaking via the Windows Team blog, Microsoft's Stephen Rose said it was time that XP became a relic of the past, and stated that users should take the Windows 7 plunge. After all the company has sold over 400 million Windows 7 licences globally.

"Wouldn’t it be great if the glory days lasted forever?" he asked ."But reality is trophies get dusty, records are broken, and what it took to be the best ten years ago, just isn’t enough for today’s standards. Things get better, faster. And eventually, it’s time to move from good enough to something much better.

"Windows XP had an amazing run and millions of PC users are grateful for it. But it’s time to move on. Two reasons: 1) Extended support for Windows XP is running out in less than 1000 days, and 2) there’s an OS out there that’s much better than Windows XP."

Windows XP was released almost 10 years ago. Yet still (as of May 2011, at least) it is still the most widely used operating system in the world with a 40 per cent share - mainly due to the large business community that still employs the platform. Windows 7 comes in 2nd with just under 30 per cent, Vista in 3rd with around 13 per cent and Mac OS X 4th with around 7 per cent.

Rose urged those businesses in particular to upgrade soon though. "Act quickly because time is limited, and organisations that have not started deployment or in the early phases of the project need to accelerate," he said.

"According to a recent Garter report more than 50 per cent of organisations that do not start deploying Windows 7 by early 2012 will not complete their deployments before Windows XP support ends, and will incur increased support costs."

Xbox 720 rumours: How will the new Xbox look?

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://cdn.asset.t3.com/images/variants/Tai_Chem_610_2_w300.jpgAt E3 2011, a raft of new Kinect games and the announcement of Halo 4 were amongst the biggest headline-grabbers for Microsoft. Some Xbox 360 fans may have been disappointed by the lack of talk of a new Xbox console.

- Xbox 720 pictures: Have we seen the new Xbox already?

While Sony brought us the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo unveiled the Wii U this year, the rumour-mill has already been set in motion that next year could see the official unveiling of the new Xbox console.

With that in mind, we've taken a look at the latest talk surrounding the Xbox 360 successor to find out how close we really are to the console being dubbed as the 'Xbox 720.'

Xbox 720 already in development

Evidence that work on the Xbox 720 work has already begun comes courtesy of a series of job listings spotted by Beyond 3D Forum earlier this year which appeared on business networking site LinkedIn. The three positions advertised included a Senior Architect and Performance Engineer for the Xbox Console Architecture Group, a Senior Hardware Design Verification Engineer and a Graphics Hardware Architect "responsible for defining and delivering next-generation console architectures from conception through implementation".

Putting things into context, the original Xbox 360 was launched back in 2005, while the Xbox 360 S console only launched last year. Microsoft have said that the Xbox 360 is about halfway through its lifecycle, but it makes a whole lot of sense that Microsoft would already be thinking about life beyond the current console.

Xbox 720 specs

It's would be no major suprise if the Xbox 720 ramps it up in the power department, but according to John Carmack, the man behind legendary titles Doom and Quake and Rage, it could be as much as ten times more powerful than the current Xbox 360.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Carmack said, “The next-generation will be here soon, a couple of years. It'll be another ten times as powerful as this generation. I'd be surprised if that doesn't last over a decade before people wind up saying, well, we've really tapped out everything you could possibly do on there."

Xbox 720 controller

Kinect, Microsoft's motion controller it appears, is here to stay and was even stated by one Microsoft exec last year to give the Xbox 360 another five years of life. As we have seen from the Kinect announcements at E3 2011, Microsoft is beginning to look at ways of integrating Kinect into more 'hardcore' games, so the motion controller is likely to play a significant part in any next generation Xbox console.

Will Microsoft choose to follow in the footsteps of Nintendo with the Wii U controller? As fans of the current Xbox 360 controller, we sincerely hope they do not stray too far from the current design.

Xbox 720 and Blu-ray

Will Microsoft go the way of the Sony PS3 and adopt Blu-ray for its next console? Developers have previously complained of the restrictions of the current Xbox 360 disc format, but according to Director of Xbox and Entertainment at Microsoft, Stephen McGill, they willl not be going the way of Blu-ray believing that digital media is the way forward. In an interview with CVg last year, McGill said:

"We have no plans to adopt [a] Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment started last autumn when Xbox 360 became the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies."

Xbox 720 gaming in the cloud

With the likes of Amazon and Apple launching cloud services, could the next Xbox enable gamers to play games wherever you are? Cloud gaming service OnLive could be a possible solution. OnLive VP of Engineering Joe Bentley recently spoke to CVG and when asked if he could see its service working with Microsoft and Sony, responded:

"Absolutely, they would make great consoles. Our controller is a hybrid between a PS3 controller and an Xbox controller. It's all compatible, it would just work. There are OnLive guys chatting [Sony and MS], but we'll see where it goes. But it would absolutely work, we're ready to work with everybody."

Xbox 720 to be announced at E3 2012

Will Microsoft redress the balance at next year’s LA gaming expo? First talk of an E3 2012 unveiling surfaced when Crysis 2 devs Crytek were reported to have claimed that the new console was E3 2012-bound, and that the company was working on a new Timesplitters title for the new Xbox 720.

Crytek have since refuted the claims, but BGR now say that they have it on good authority from a source “with knowledge of Microsoft’s plans within the company’s Entertainment and Devices Division” that the Xbox 720 will be announced at E3 2012. They were also told that Microsoft has been working on the new console since 2006, which supports comments made by Microsoft EMEA Vice President Chris Lewis way back in 2006.

Xbox 720 UK release date

If talk of an Xbox 720 E3 2012 announcement proves accurate, we could well see the new console on the shelves the following year in 2013. However, with Kinect set to breathe more life into Xbox gaming as more titles embrace the motion-sensing controller, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnich could be right with his pre-E3 2011 comments. Despite Nintendo replacing the Wii, Zelnich believes there is still iife in the Xbox 360 and PS3 saying, "We still have plenty of room to push the limits of creativity in the current console generation."

The 231 mph Brabus Mercedes 800E - world's fastest and most powerful four-seat cabriolet

Diposting oleh nangsa on Senin, 11 Juli 2011

Brabus specialises in building fast cars - very fast cars. Indeed, it already holds the record for building the world's fastest production sedan and the world's fastest production coupe, so in claiming the title of the world's fastest cabriolet, it's not that much of a surprise.
Given that the base vehicles used in Brabus' two prior "world's fastest" efforts are all Mercedes, and each uses the V12 Brabus motor, much of the knowledge required for building this supercar had already been acquired prior to commencement of the project.
The Brabus 800E V12 cabriolet begins life as a brand new Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet. The biggest single change is a heart transplant with the donor heart (a three-valve Mercedes S 600 V12) also getting a significant makeover before being surgically implanted. The end result is a 6.3 liter, Biturbo V12 producing 788 bhp (588 kW) @ 5,500 rpm and a peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft) which is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft).
The BRABUS 800 V12 is fitted with a high-performance limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent, and despite the relatively heavy weight of the Mercedes E Class, can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.7 seconds.
That's supercar class sprint acceleration, but the Brabus 800 keeps accelerating at this outrageous rate, passing 200 km/h (124 mph) in under ten seconds (actually 9.9 seconds) and 300-km/h (186-mph) in 23.9 seconds. Depending on the final-drive ratio, the BRABUS 800 E V12 Cabriolet tops out at 370 km/h (231 mph).,
The engine used in the vehicle is the most powerful engine built by Brabus - a stroked and bored V12 three-valve Mercedes S 600 unit, which expands capacity from the standard 5.5 liters, to the Brabus engine's 6.3 liters. There are many aspects to the re-engineering of the motor - different camshafts, flowed heads, a new intake manifold, new exhaust manifolds with integrated very large turbos, four water-to-air intercoolers, a beefed up five-speed automatic transmission, an entirely new high-flow, stainless-steel exhaust system, and newly programmed mapping for the electronic engine management system.
All the aerodynamic-enhancement components were refined in the wind tunnel, and all are made from carbon fiber. The front apron is designed to both reduce lift on the front axle and guide cooling air to the radiators and front brakes. Air outlets in the sides route the hot air away from the heat exchangers as quickly as possible.
For further improved directional stability at extremely high speeds and to further increase cornering speeds, BRABUS widens the body of the E-Class Cabriolet. Newly designed front sport fenders widen the track and allow the installation of ultra-wide 9.5Jx19 wheels mounted with size 265/30 ZR 19 tires.
Professional engineering work was also invested into every detail of the suspension: special suspension components were custom-designed for the front and rear axle of the BRABUS E V12 Cabriolet. They provide a much wider range of individual suspension settings. These components are joined by a BRABUS coil-over suspension calibrated to the higher engine weight. The suspension was developed together with Bilstein and features ten selectable settings for bound and rebound front and back. The ride height can also be adjusted by up to 35 millimeter.
The BRABUS high-performance. It features 380 x 37 millimeter (15.0 x 1.45 in.), vented and grooved steel brake discs and 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers on the front axle. The rear stops on 360 x 28 millimeter (14.2 x 1.1 in.) discs with 6-piston aluminum fixed calipers.
The cockpit is clad in a perfectly finished combination of lipstick-red and black leather. The ergonomically shaped BRABUS steering wheel and inlays made from genuine carbon fiber on dashboard, center console and side trim add sporty highlights. The speedometer with 400-km/h (250-mph) dial bears witness to the unique performance potential of the open- top four-seater car even while it is standing still.
When the engine is in place, and the hundreds of other modifications to the vehicle have been completed, it has a top speed of 370 km/h (231 mph) and a price tag of EUR 478,000 (US$682,000).

Android is under Attack

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://static_1.i4u.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/main_image_fullwidth/images/2011/05/android-logo-big.jpgHTC is already paying a license fee to Microsoft for each Android phone sold. According to Reuters, Microsoft is now after Samsung to make them pay too. It is all about the patents Microsoft owns that give them the power to demand license fees for Android. An interesting report over at TechCrunch shows that Apple is indirectly helping Microsoft to maintain the edge over Google in terms of patents.

The recent auction of the Nortel patent portfolio reads like a high stake poker game. The report reveals that Apple supported a bidder consortium that includes Microsoft to win against Google in the bidding. Apple was bidding for the patents by themselves for a while, but then decided to stake a goup that includes RIM, EMC, Ericsson, Sony, and Microsoft.

With the Nortel patents Google could have had a chance to counter the Microsoft push to charge license fees for Android. Now it looks like Microsoft is even in a much better position to get all major Android phone makers to pay license fees.

This license fee could evolve in a major problem for the growth of Android. Phone and tablet makers might leave Android and use either free OSes (MeeGo anyone?) or shop around at HP and yes, Microsoft.

SWAP gets world's-lightest-phone record at the Gadget Show

Diposting oleh nangsa

http://www.computeractive.co.uk/IMG/578/169578/nova-red-hand-370x229.jpg?1302789917Watch-and-phone maker SWAP (which apparently stands for 'Smart Watch and Phone') has been recognised as the manufacturer of the lightest phone in the world.

The SWAP Nova measures 6.9 x 3.8cm and is under 2cm thick, and it weighs only 43g, but it manages to squeeze in a 1.8in colour screen and can still comfortably fit into a user's hand, as you can see from our picture above.

It's no smartphone, with no access to email, the world wide web or 'apps', but it does have Bluetooth connectivity, a calendar, clock and radio. It can also play music stored on the supplied 2GB micro-SD card, which can be replaced for up to 8GB of storage.

At the company's stand at the Gadget Show Live 2011 in Birmingham's NEC, the phone was recognised by Guinness World Records as the lightest in the world.

SWAP was also showing its watch-phone the Rebel. Both the Rebel and the Nova are available from SWAP's website and other retailers.

Google pulls co.cc subdomains from search, brings our global malware nightmare to an end

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/07/malware-1310150168.jpgGoogle's been on a creative tear lately, rolling out new products and revamping older ones. But there's a reason the phrase "search giant" is synonymous with Big G, and it's always working to return better results. Sometimes that means tweaking its algorithm to prevent SEO-gaming; other times it means dropping over 11 million sites from search results, as the company just did in blocking the .co.cc subdomain. Google classifies it as a "freehost" -- it belongs to a Korean company that provides free or cheap domains, often bulk-registered -- and after automated scanning revealed a high percentage of malware-hosting sites, decided to scrub the entire lot from its results. Of course, this is something like using a nuclear weapon against cockroaches: it causes a lot of collateral damage, while your real target scurries to its next hideout. Still, we wish Google well in its bravely quixotic mission.

Private profiles not allowed on Google+

Diposting oleh nangsa

Profiles on Google+ have to be public, and only by individuals.

The new social network, Google+, has given users time till the end of July, to make their profiles public, or they will be deleted.

According to the Google+ FAQs, "nearly all Google Profiles are public", and the aim of these profiles is to manage a public identity.

It says: "Private profiles don't allow this, so we have decided to require all profiles to be public." It adds that full name and gender are the only two items that have to be visible on the public profile, while other items can be hidden from public view if needed.

"If you currently have a private profile but you do not wish to make your profile public, you can delete your profile. Or, you can simply do nothing. All private profiles will be deleted after July 31, 2011," according to the website.

In addition, it has been reported that profiles created by and for businesses are being removed from the networking site, as Google is aiming Google+ solely at individuals.

Google+ is now open to anyone with a Google account, and at a recent press conference, Eric Schmidt, executive chairman, Google, said he would "love to have deeper integration with Twitter and Facebook." Techies will recall that Google real time search no longer includes tweets as the deal fell through.
